Strongbow originally built a wooden castle on that site overlooking the River Nore in 1172. Around 30 years later, his son-in-law, the Earl of Pembroke built the first stone castle. Three of this castle's original four towers survive today.

Leighlin Bridge Village - One of the oldest bridges in Europe 1320 AD.
Over 300 years before the Christian era, a great battle took place here to capture the fort of Dinn Righ, reputedly the ancient seat of the Kings of Leinster. The focal point of Leighlinbridge is its valerian bearded bridge, built in 1320 by Maurice Jakis, Canon of Kildare Cathedral. It remains today one of the oldest functioning bridges in Europe.

The Borris Railway Viaduct with its sixteen arches supported by soaring limestone pillars is one of Ireland's best example of pioneering 19th. Century railway engineering. Designed by the engineer William Le Fanu (1816– 1894) and built by M. Talbot. The Viaduct rises to 60ft high and spans the Borris and Mountain River Valley. It was built at a cost of £20,000 and completed in 1860.Whats on in Carlow/Kilkenny.
